Elder Abuse

Elder abuse has been defined by the World Health Organisation as 'a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person'.

Elder abuse can take various forms, including: financial, physical, psychological, emotional and sexual abuse, or neglect. No older person should be subjected to any form of abuse.

Research from Australia and overseas shows that up to 14 per cent of older people may be experiencing elder abuse. The real number may be higher because many people feel they cannot speak up. While older women are two to three times more likely to experience abuse than older men, the proportion of older men who experience abuse is higher than for younger men.

Key statements for an elder to consider are:

  • I am treated with respect by family and friends

  • I know how my money is being spent

  • I choose what happens in my home

  • Decision about my life are in my best interest

  • My will reflects my own wishes

  • I know where my medication is

If an answer is ‘no’ to any of these statements, then there may be an incidence of elder abuse.

If you experience, witness, or suspect elder abuse, call the confidential National Elder Abuse phone line for information, support and referrals on 1800 353 374.
