Investment Philosophy

Over the course of our 40 year journey, we have derived our own investment approach that we believe offers investors superior investment outcomes.

At the core of our investment philosophy, is the belief that markets are not efficient and that you are not always rewarded for the risk you take. We endeavour to construct portfolios that will achieve a target level of return over an investment cycle, whilst keeping capital volatility to a minimum.

To achieve this, the following approaches are ingrained in our process:

  • We implement diversification across asset classes. We define our investment universe into 8 asset classes, Australian Shares, Global Shares, Property, Infrastructure, Private Equity, Alternatives, Fixed Interest & Cash. We have a firm belief that each asset class adds different risks and drivers of return to the portfolio which is important from a risk management perspective.

  • Analyse investment opportunities and risks at both a macro (big picture) and micro (individual investment) level. This allows us to identify potential risks to the portfolios but also identify opportunities that could be actionable for the portfolio.

  • Leverage an internal research team that works to identify and analyse investment opportunities across our investment universe, identifying attractive investments and discounting poor investment options.

  • Determine internal outlooks for each asset class that drives the direction of our portfolio positioning. The committee actively manages our asset and manager exposure and takes definitive action on our convictions.

  • Operate unconstrained investment portfolios. This allows us to pursue our highest conviction investment themes. This flexibility gives us the ability to take advantage of the market environment and position assets most effectively.

  • Incorporate non-traditional asset classes such as private equity, liquid alternatives, or direct property & infrastructure to further diversify portfolios and introduce additional sources of return. These assets play a major role in managing portfolio volatility.
